Although Pinedo-Velapatino may have been able to get away with the crime for a month, he caught the attention of two police officers who were beginning to make their routine rounds at 7:30 a.m. on August 26.

The two officers came across a hit-and-run incident on Federal Highway and Lindell Boulevard and immediately rushed to the accident victim's aid. While one officer stayed behind to care for the victim, the second officer instantly took off after what later turned out to be Pinedo-Velapatino's getaway car.

When the officer discovered that the car was steering in the direction of Boca Raton, he informed the area's officers right away. Pinedo-Velapatino continued to lead the officer into one of the neighboring cul-de-sacs, where his reckless driving led him to bump into several objects.

With the officer still following him, Pinedo-Velapatino crashed into the officer's car twice before giving up on driving altogether. Changing his tactic, Pinedo-Velapatino crashed his own car into a nearby fire hydrant and continued his escape on foot.

Once away from the officer, Pinedo-Velapatino began searching for a hideout before spotting a house close to the scene.

The homeowner, a single woman, had answered Pinedo-Velapatino, and he was quick to make up an excuse to come inside. According to the homeowner, Pinedo-Velapatino had informed her that he was mowing the lawn next door and asked her to bring him a glass of water.

While the woman did not hesitate to bring Pinedo-Velapatino a glass of water, she quickly became suspicious when she noticed that he had let himself into her house and was playing with her pet cats. It was then that the woman called the patrolling Boca Raton police, who arrested Pinedo-Velapatino and transported him to the Palm Beach County jail.

Pinedo-Velapatino is currently being held on a US$76,000 bail.
