Chicago Sky Captures First WNBA Eastern Conference Title

Allie Quigley scored 24 points off the bench to lead Chicago Sky to its first WNBA Eastern Conference title and marched to the WNBA Finals at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Tuesday night.

Both teams started out neck-and-neck in the first quarter as either team doesn't want the other to pull out ahead but Chicago went up by four and the end of the quarter 15-11 due to the efforts of Quigley and Sylvia Fowles who converted their free throws after getting fouled on the way to the basket.

Lynette Kizer of the Indiana Fever tied the score at 15 a piece to start the second quarter but Quigley, coming off the bench, quickly turn things around as the Sky slowly went out on top 37-29 at the end of the half.

Chicago upped its lead by another point in a low-scoring third quarter, 16 against the 15 of Indiana but the Sky held off a run from the Fever and pulled away in the fourth quarter after Quigley scored her fourth three-point shot to win the decisive game and the title 75-62.

Chicago center Fowles scored 17 points and 7 rebounds to contribute to the 24 points of Quigley, and Epiphanny Prince scored an additional 11 points for Sky while Shavonte Zellous was the only player for Indiana who scored double-digits with 16 points and Erlana Larkins contributed with a game-high of 11 rebounds.

Phoenix Mercury head coach Lin Dunn had announced before the tournament started that she will be retiring at the end of the season. She will be replaced by assistant coach Stephanie White who was also an assistant coach for the Chicago Sky in 2007 to 2011.

The Sky will face the Phoenix Mercury in the finals who won the Western Conference title against the defending champions Minnesota Lynx in their best-of-3 showdown.
