A European company has used 3D-printing technology to create a lightweight electric motorcycle that not only look cool but also performs well.

European aeronautics giant Airbus' subsidiary company APWorks created the Light Rider, an electric motorbike that unlike other 3D-printed items, was produced using metal powder, according to Engadget. While it looks like a marriage of alien design and Swiss cheese, it promises to deliver good running performance to bikers.

The hollow frame is made of APWorks’ “Scalmalloy” aircraft-grade aluminum, which means it is sturdy just like the planes Airbus makes. The frame has taken shape through thousands of thin layers of metal. Despite the fact that the frame is made of metal, the Light Rider weighs amazingly light at 35 kilograms which probably makes it the lightest motorcycle in the world.

Don’t underestimate the Light Rider’s capacity for a powerful ride. The Light Rider boasts of zero to 45kph acceleration in merely three seconds. It also boasts of an 80kph top speed.

While the Light Rider’s power is considered impressive in light of its low weight, enthusiasts will discover that its power-to-weight ratio equals that of a supercar. Helmets are definitely in season.

The Light Rider is powered by a 6 kW electric motor. One full charge gives riders a smooth, silent and emission-free ride over a maximum distance of 37 miles.

Airbus is slated to produce only 50 units of Light Riders, each of which will be sold for a whopping US $56,095 (about 367,195 yuan).
