Excessive Consumption of Energy Drinks can Lead to Heart Problems

Energy drink

A health warning on a can of an energy drink states that "consumption of more than two cans in a day may be harmful to your health."

Be warned.

A new study shows that too much consumption of energy drinks can cause heart problems such as angina and cardiac arrhythmia.

Professor Milou-Daniel Drici from the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis said imbibing too much energy drinks when exercising can cause heart problems and even sudden death.

He explained that 96 percent of energy drinks contain caffeine, with a 0.25 liter can holding two espressos worth of caffeine.

He said too much caffeine can cause a massive release of calcium in the cardiac cells. This release can cause arrhythmias and impair the ability of the heart to contract and use oxygen.

Researchers found out that the "caffeine syndrome," which is characterized by a rapid heart rate, tremor, anxiety and headache, occurred in 60 people they tested.

Prof. Drici explained there are severe events associated with drinking too much energy drinks like unexplained deaths, arrhythmia and myocardial infarction.

He reminded patients with cardiac conditions like catecholaminergic arrhythmias, long QT syndrome and angina to avoid stimulants containing large amounts of caffeine.

Prof. Drici said the public has to know that energy drinks have no positive effects during physical exercise compared to other drinks designed for the same purpose.

He said patients rarely mention too much energy drink consumption to doctors unless asked.

He asks doctors to warn patients with cardiac conditions of the potential dangers of drinking energy drinks.
