In the first set, both men would not give in their serves as they end up in a tie-break with Djokovic winning 7 points to one.

The two champions just wouldn't budge in the second set and ended up in another tie-break with another 7-1 win but this time Murray had the upper hand.

Born only a week apart, the younger Djokovic got the break that he wanted and took command of the third and fourth sets to win the marathon.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion entered his eighth consecutive semi-finals in New York and had accomplished 18 majors semis appearance in a row.

Djokovic is set to go up against Nishikori who earlier upset Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka in another five-set game 3-6 7-5 7(9)-6(7) 6(5)-7(7) 6-4.

The Japanese national also defeated fifth seeded Milos Raonic in five sets which started Monday and ended early Tuesday during the quarter-finals.

Nishikori, 24, said that he loves to play up to four or five sets especially in the fifth set where he built more confidence.

"I get more concentration and my tennis is getting better playing in the fourth or fifth sets," said Nishikori.

Djokovic has dropped only one set throughout the tournament against Murray and if Nishikori wants to extend the match, he should pressure the Serb with his returns and baseline play.

Nishikori last won against Djokovic in 2011 at the semis of the Swiss Indoors in Basel.blank_page
