Hard disk drive manufacturer Western Digital is marketing "WD My Passport Wireless," a portable storage disk that accommodates up to eight devices simultaneously.

The new device lets users stream video from the drive, as well as back-up and access data on smart devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Users have become wary of online cloud services in the wake of the "Fappening," a massive leak of private and intimate videos and photos of various celebrities. It was a breach of Apple's iCloud service that led to the nude photo scandal.

Instead of buying a new microSD card with a bigger capacity or buying a smartphone with the most internal memory, a user can store his files on the My Passport with confidence his data will remain safe from online hackers.

Users that use the drive have to be near the device to store files or have access to the data within the hardware. The device has no cloud-based access to the content.

Tablets, Wi-Fi cameras, laptops, computers, smartphones and TVs will display My Passport as a Wi-Fi access point.

After pairing the devices, a user can access the content on the drive with a laptop or desktop computer or through the My Cloud application for the iOS and Anroid operating systems.

While there are currently many wireless storage devices, My Passport sets itself apart with its ability to be used as an on-the-go storage medium for videographers and photographers.

If the user puts a card in the built-in SD card slot, the hard drive automatically identifies and backs-up any pictures it hasn't copied.

The WD My Passport Wireless has 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB models. It retails for US$130, US$180 and US$220, respectively.
