Facebook Inc. announced on Monday, May 23, 2016, that it has revised its procedures for choosing the "Trending Topics" listed on the famous social networking site. The statement was made after the U.S. Congress called for transparency following reports that conservative news stories do not find their way to Facebook's "Trending Topics."

The company has conducted an internal investigation, and claims there is no proof that there is political bias in the methods it uses for selecting stories to be listed in the aforementioned section. However, the social media giant announced that it has made several changes to deal with these allegations.
The accusations from a former Facebook contractor prompted Senator John Thune to address the issue. The Republican Senator demanded that the company reveals the selection process for news articles to become part of the trending topics list.
Facebook addressed the senator's request and reported that both conservative and liberal news became part of the list at practically same rates. The company also revealed that its probe did not show any data that would support the accusation that certain subjects or sources were preferred more than others.
Facebook's General Counsel Colin Stretch admitted in a blogpost that they the company's process of selecting articles is not 100 percent free from unintentional bias or the possibility of improper actions even if there are guidelines to be followed.
Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg also took the time to meet with conservative media personalities and politicians to address the growing concerns about the possibility of the social media giant abusing the public's trust.
