Microsoft introduced two new smartphones at the ongoing Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) Berlin electronics show.

The company is emphasizing the affordability and camera applications of its new models as it fights to become a tougher competitor against the Android phones and iPhones already on the market.

Microsoft Corporate Vice President for Mobile Device Sales Chris Weber even went as far as criticizing the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the iPhone 5s for their high retail prices as he compared both phones to the recently revealed Nokia Lumia 830.

He said while the iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S5 retail for US$649 and US$600, respectively, Microsoft's new smartphone goes for only US$400.

Although the Lumia 830 has been labeled by Microsoft as its "affordability flagship" phone, it's not the Lumia Microsoft puts in the front line as its real flagship phone.

That phone seems to be the Nokia Lumia 930, which Verizon has named the Lumia Icon.

Revealed in July, the Lumia 930 sports a sharp 5-inch screen with a 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution and a 20 megapixel camera. The smartphone is equipped with a 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2 GB worth of random access memory, which converts into fast performance and responsive multitasking.

Meanwhile, the Lumia 830 has a 4.7-inch display and a screen resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels; a 10 megapixel camera and a 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor.

In spite of Weber stating the device will be on par with other frontline smartphones, the screen and processor will place the 830 at the lower end of the high-end category.

The camera of the newly announced Lumia could give Apple and Samsung smartphones a run for their money as it takes better pictures, especially in dark conditions. The camera is equipped with a PureView sensor, which Microsoft says is the thinnest with optical image stabilization.
