In surveillance footage recovered from the Irving Plaza in Union Square, Ave, whose real name is Ronald Collins, was captured opening fire in the backstage area of the venue.

After Collins fired the first show, a gunfight ensued between him and rival rapper Maino, who had just finished performing onstage. Collins fired off a minimum of five shots using a 9mm handgun in a green room located above the stage.

Collins accidentally shot himself in the firefight, which claimed the life of his bodyguard, Ronald McPhatter, after he suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach.

The rapper has now been charged with attempted murder and illegal weapons possession. An additional murder charge could be added depending on the results of the ballistics test.

McPhatter's mother told WABC-TV that her son died trying to save Collins' life. "My son jumped in to assist Troy," she said. "He was very protective. He was very protective of his family."

"Right now I probably am trying to figure out what happened and why. You know, I want answers," she added.

T.I. took to Twitter on Thursday to offer his condolences to McPhatter's family and the other victims of the shooting.

"My heart is heavy today. Our music is intended to save lives, like it has mine and many others," he tweeted. "My heartfelt condolences to the family that suffered the loss & my prayers are with all those injured."
