Itseez was founded in 2005. The company's products include a wide-range of algorithms that can be integrated into cars. The company calls its technology "advanced driver assistance systems." According to Fortune, the technology allows the car hardware to recognize elements in its immediate environment which could include pedestrians crossing the street, traffic signs. With the technology, the car can send out warning signals about potential collisions.
Intel's latest acquisition comes shortly after the company announced the purchase of Yogitech, another startup company that focuses on the development of the Internet of Things platform. Yogitech is based in Italy and mainly works on the development of safety for semiconductors. Among its products is a technology that ensures that all microchips powering self-driving vehicles are properly working.
In 2015, Intel also acquired Lantiq, another Internet of Things startup that focuses on manufacturing chips that power smart objects.
In a statement acquired by Tech Crunch, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the company's Internet of Things group said, "Itseez will become a key ingredient for Intel's Internet of Things Group roadmap, and will help Intel's customers create innovative deep-learning-based [computer vision] applications like autonomous driving, digital security and surveillance, and industrial application."
Aside from developing technologies for self-driving cars, Itseez has also dipped its toes into the development of algorithms for sports analytics, surveillance, robotics, and smartphones.
The Itseez acquisition is part of Intel's strategy to transform the company from a microchip manufacturer into a company well-versed in the Internet of Things platform, as well as the analysis of data coming from smart devices.
