"X-Men: Apocalypse" easily won the Memorial Day box-office race, amassing $80 million from more than 4,000 locations. Meanwhile, the family-friendly "Alice Through the Looking Glass" flopped, grossing just $34.2 million from more than 3,000 locations and 70 percent less than Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" in 2010.

'X-Men: Apocalypse' Takes A Hit Despite Box Office Sales

CinemaBlend said that everyone was already expecting that "X-Men: Apocalypse" will end as the number one movie over the weekend. However, the movie raked in 30 percent less than "X-Men: Days of the Future Past," which earned $110 million over the Memorial Day weekend in 2014.

There were predictions that "X-Men: Apocalypse" will make about $85 million to $100 million. However, Fox was more conservative, predicting sales of to close around $80. Sales slowed down on Friday evening, with sales ending around Fox's prediction. Meanwhile, "Apocalypse" ended well globally, amassing $265.8 million worldwide.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is the only movie in the franchise that has failed to earn up to $100 on its opening weekend.

Alice Through The Looking Glass Bombed

Meanwhile, Disney's big-budget film rolled out at the same time Johnny Depp's wife was granted a restraining order against him over allegations of abuse. Box-office observers believe that the scandal likely affected the opening of the movie.

Throughout the weekend, projections for "Alice Though The Looking Glass" was reduced repeatedly. It was initially expected to open at $55 million or more. However, it ended with just $28 million, a huge drop from the $110 million debut of the 2010s "Alice in Wonderland."

"Alice Through The Looking Glass" stars Johnny Depp once more as Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. However, Tim Burton did not return to direct the film. The new "Alice" was helmed by James Bobin, who also directed the "Muppets" franchise for Disney. The film cost around $170 million to produce.
