Former NBA head coach PJ Carlesimo turned down the offer of the Philadelphia 76ers for him to replace Houston Rockets-bound Mike D'Antoni as an associate head coach of the squad.

The 67-year-old former Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Brooklyn Nets head coach reasoned out his family as the main hindrance to the relocation.

The Philadelphia Inquirer cited Sixers head coach Brett Brown as saying that he has "two young boys, one's in high school" on the West Coast and working in Philly will make him stay away from them most of the time.

Carlesimo is said to have decided to stay as a TV and radio broadcaster and analyst for ESPN instead.

"As we talked, he felt like he couldn't make the move and I respect it, knowing him like I know him," Brett Brown recounted his phone call with Carlesimo on Sunday. "It didn't surprise me. He's got two young boys, one's in high school. They are on the West Coast."

"Maybe if I was the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, the distance would have been palatable," Brown added.

The head coach noted that Philadelphia is still in "complete development mode" and that he is searching for coaches that can mentor and establish relationships with his squad composed mainly of young players such as Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid, Robert Covington, and Jerami Grant.

Philadelphia also owns the no. 1 pick in the upcoming 2016 NBA Draft this June, which will add another young professional to their side.

CSN Philly noted that the Sixers' "next choice for the role is remains to be seen" but it would most likely be someone that is close to Brown as well as to new team president and general manager Bryan Colangelo.

Carlesimo last served as an interim for Brooklyn during the 2012-2013 season before he retired from coaching and became a television analyst.
