Cerati was once the frontman of the band called Soda Stereo that had won four Latin Grammys. He was also known as one of the most influential musicians who made LatAm rock famous.

A spokesman from the clinic where the pop icon died released a statement on Thursday saying, "Sadly, Gustavo passed away this morning as a consequence of cardio-respiratory failure we weren't able to revert. He had kept stable all throughout this time".

His family also announced about the death of Cerati and that there will be a public wake which will be held at the Buenos Aires Legislature.

The death of the singer has become a hot topic and was trending on Twitter overnight. Notable musicians such as Ricky Martin and Shakira have posted their messages about the pop icon.

Also, the Argentine President, Cristina Kirchner, posted a photo of Cerati. She also uploaded a video of Cerati and rock legend Luis Alberto Spinetta who also died two years ago. The President captioned the video with "Cerati and 'Flaco' Spinetta, popular idols for several generations of Argentines".

Cerati's band, Soda Stereo, was formed during the 80s together with Zeta Basio as his bassist and Charly Alberti as his drummer. Sources say that the Soda Stereo was the first and the only Argentine pop band that became famous across Latin American countries from the 80s to the 90s.

The band broke up in 1997 and Cerati has been flying solo ever since. He was able to produce four hit albums.

However, the band again performed in one stage back in 2007 with the tour entitled "The Last Concert". The band played in Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Panama, The United States, Buenos Aires and Venezuela.

Cerati's songs centered on seduction, inner turmoil, and disillusionment that became popular to the youth.
