The character of Mary Poppins was first introduced in P.L. Travers' 1934 book, from which the iconic film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke was adapted. Travers went on to pen seven additional novels that were published between 1935 and 1988.
Adapted from the same collection of novels, Disney's upcoming film will take place in Depression-era London and follows a grown-up version of Jane and Michael Banks, whose family, including three children, is visited by Mary Poppins following a personal tragedy and uses her magical powers with the help of her friend Jack to bring joy and happiness back into their lives.
The film will be helmed by Rob Marshall, whose credits include Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Memoirs of a Geisha and Chicago.
"I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers' further adventures to the screen," Marshall said.
"The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation," he added.
The film, titled Mary Poppins Returns, is slated to hit theaters on Christmas Day 2018.
