Following the worldwide premiere of "X-Men Apocalypse," FX Network has given the green light to "Legion," an eight-episode series adapted from the Marvel franchise. According to Entertainment Weekly, "Legion" will follow David Haller (Stevens), a schizophrenic who has been battling mental illness for years. The series will delve into David's journey as he realizes that his extraordinary abilities (such as seeing visions and hearing voices) might lead him to something big.

In the Marvel comics lore, Haller is the mutant son of Professor Charles Xavier. Xavier's character has been portrayed by Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy in the big screen adaptation of the "X-Men" franchise, but moviegoers are yet to meet Haller into the cinematic platform.

FX Networks and FX Productions President Nick Grad released a statement following the announcement on May 31, Monday. He commended the work of executive producer Noah Hawley, who is also behind FX drama, "Fargo."

"We've come to expect excellence from Noah Hawley and with 'Legion' he has delivered another major creative achievement," said Grad. "Just as he did in reimagining 'Fargo,' he is bringing an entirely new aesthetic and sensibility to the enormously popular and richly represented [the] X-Men world."

As for the other major players in the show, Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) will play David's friend, Lenny; Jean Smart will play a therapist; and Rachel Keller will take on the role of a character "rumored to be a mix of Rogue and Spyke," The Hollywood Reporter revealed.

Aside from Hawley, "X-Men" executive producers Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg will be working on"Legion." The trio will be joined by Marvel's Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.
