A note was discovered in the scene, although it is still not clear if it is related to the incident, LAPD's chief spokesman, Capt. Andy Neiman, said.

No immediate motive was also cited as to the cause of the event.

Hundreds of law enforcers from the campus police, LAPD, FBI and Santa Monica rush to the campus to investigate the area, although the emergency was now declared over.

"The campus is now safe," said Neiman, who also explained that the frequent occurrence of mass shootings these days called on for the considerable response from authorities.

"In this day and age ... we would much rather respond in an abundance of caution," he said.

A campus alert was raised after students heard gunshots in the Engineering IV building near Boelter Hall. A 911 call immediately alerted campus police.

"We immediately put out a Bruin alert - that's our campus alert notification system - to advise all of those in our campus community of an incident that occurred that could be dangerous to them," James Herren, the police's area chief, said at a news conference.

Students and staff were forced to hide in classrooms and offices, barricading entrances for protection. Images of doors secured with belts and makeshift barricades immediately swarmed social media.

"Using my belt to lock the door down," Carrie Rapaport posted on Twitter.

The campus was cleared of threat at 12:05 p.m.

Classes was suspended last Wednesday and are expected to resume Thursday.
