An extremely rare event is unfolding inside a cave in Slovenia in eastern Europe, where highly unusual salamanders are now hatching from these "dragon eggs".

These cave dragons or more commonly known as the olm or proteus, which can be described as a pale and blind salamander that thrives inside caves, possesses a reproduction rate of every five to 10 years, where scientists say that these creatures can live up to 100 years. Locals call them baby dragons, as these olms can reach measurements of only eight to 12 inches long.

On a Facebook status, the Postojna Caves excitedly announced the birth of their first Baby Dragon, on Wednesday.

A new baby olm made its way out of its egg, Wednesday, where there are still 21 developed eggs waiting to hatch inside an aquarium inside the Postojna Caves which is also very popular with tourists.

The female mother dragon salamander originally gave birth to 64 eggs which were all laid in a period of weeks, however, only 23 embryos developed, as the first dragon egg was observed in January.

The last time that any dragon eggs were laid inside the Postojna caves were about two years ago, however, they fell victim as prey to other creatures that also inhabit the cave. This time around, biologists were able to isolate the female mother dragon salamander along with her eggs in a safer, darker spot where they added extra oxygen and removed anything that can possibly disturb or harm the dragon eggs and its mother.

Olms are so elusive and mysterious that they have been considered as creatures of curiosity by scientists and researchers. These fragile creatures are also native to the underground river system of the Balkans where famous naturalist Charles Darwin even mentioned this species in his works.
