The 4K desktop display bandwagon is now obsolete because there's a 5K monitor from Dell.

On Thursday, Dell announced its new UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor. It's a 27-inch PC monitor with 5120 x 2880 resolution.

Dell's display packs the equivalent of 14.7 megapixels compared to the 8.3MP found in a standard 3840 x 2160 4K monitor, and seven times the resolution of a typical 1080p display.

The new and impressive Dell desktop will replace IBM's mythical 13-year-old T220/T221 as the highest-res desktop monitor.

According to Dell, the UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K monitor is a workstation-grade piece of hardware. It still has the Dell PremierColor calibration, and an anti-smudge/anti-reflective coating.

It will also include two integrated 16W Harmon Kardon speakers.

The 5k monitor will also have a media card reader and six USB ports. It also needs two DisplayPort 1.2 connections for full fidelity with Multi-Stream Transport (MST).

This is because no one is actually making 5120 x 880 panels. The 5k monitor probably uses two 2560 x 2880 panels squished together as a "tiled display."

The monitor can be good for gaming because of raw GPU grunt, software support and twice the number of pixels.

Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor will probably be available in the fourth quarter. It could retail at US$2,500.
