Presented by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros, "Pacific Rim" made a quite impressive start in China with an opening-day gross of $9 million dollars, which marked the biggest achievement among all the Warner Bros movies in China. By the week ending in August 11th, "Pacific Rim" gained $80.2 million dollars. By August 16th, China's domestic box office of "Pacific Rim" has reached 596 million yuan ($97.47 million USD).
Recently, there is a rumor coming around that the Chinese translator who translated for the subtitles of "Pacific Rim" has been fired. The Chinese translator is Jia Xiuyan. "Men In Black 3" is also one of her translation works. Her translation style has engendered controversy among Chinese audiences.
For example, in "Pacific Rim", the fighting style of one robot is called the "Elbow Rocket," Jia Xiuyan translated it as the "Pegasus Meteor Fist," a term borrowed from "Saint Seiya," a famous Japanese manga series which was popular across China. Moreover, she translated "sort of" into "softer" and "population" into "pollution". Jia also chose to define "doctor" as "medical doctor" in "Pacific Rim" instead of "a science doctor degree holder ".
When being interviewed on why she translated "Elbow Rocket" into "Pegasus Meteor Fist", Jia Xiuyan explained: "I have done a lot of research before deciding to translate it like that. The 'Elbow Rocket' is very much the same style of the 'Pegasus Meteor Fist.'" However, Chinese audiences don't go for her explanations. They question Jia's translation ability and ask her to resign.
