Google's latest version of its flagship mobile platform, Android Marshmallow, is slowly getting traction in terms of user base. The tech giant announced earlier this month that the Marshmallow operating system is now installed on more than 10 percent of all Android devices.

Google's latest statistics represent an increase of 2.3 percent from May. Notably, Google's report also reveals that most of these devices running on the Marshmallow operating system were upgraded from Lollipop. Meanwhile, Lollipop saw a decline of about 35.4 percent in its user base, while Jelly Bean and KitKat had the biggest declines in terms of usage.

It appears that most users whose device runs on Android Marshmallow replaced their previous smartphones, which were three or more years old.

Many market analysts claim that the growing popularity of Android Marshmallow can be traced to the abundance of smartphones being released running on the platform. Most of these are flagship devices from major Android manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, HTC, and LG.

In just a span of three months, high-end smartphones like the Galaxy S7, LG G5, HTC 10, as well as the new line of Xperia smartphones, have flooded the market - all of which runs on the Android Marshmallow operating system. Moreover, upcoming high-end devices from prominent hardware manufacturers all run on Marshmallow.

Despite its upsurge in popularity, many tech analysts are still skeptical about whether the Android Marshmallow can keep its pace. Especially now that Google is on the verge of releasing its latest mobile OS in the next few months.

In comparison, the Android Lollipop took at least a year and a half to be the dominant Android flavor.

The Android Marshmallow turned one in May. With the looming release of Android N just on the horizon, experts believe that the Android Marshmallow will not repeat the history made by its predecessor, Android Lollipop.
