Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina won their finals match against Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta to capture their first women's doubles crown at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows.
Hingis and Pennetta came out strong in the first set as they took advantage of two break points to take the set but the Russians answered back in the second set and continued their momentum onto the deciding set to win the match 2-6 6-3 6-2.
The 2013 French Open champions may have made more unforced errors, 47, but have more than made up for it with 35 winners.
Even with their downfall, the Swiss and Italian pair was happy with their performance since they have only been together this year and have participated in their first Grand Slam tournament.
"Of course I'm happy," Hingis said. "Hopefully we will have more opportunities in the near future ... then next year there is again four Grand Slams."
"We just play I think four tournament together," Pennetta said. "Everything is working pretty good."
Hingis and Pennetta had a breakthrough in their team-up in the event as they defeated the top seeded Italian pair of Sara Errani and Robert Vinci in the second round and third seeds Cara Black and Sania Mirza in the semi-finals.
The 4th seeded Russians lost the first set but found something in the second and third sets.
"We were just really like motivated and really wanted to stay with them," Makarova said. "Just keep going, keep going."
"We kind of took a risk on some points and played more aggressive than we were playing in the beginning," Vesnina said. "We kind of put pressure with them, and it worked."
Makarova and Vesnina's most memorable match in the tournament was with the Williams sisters whom they defeated in the quarter-finals in two straight sets.
