Chiefs’ DeVito, Johnson Suffer Achilles Injuries in First Game

Derrick Johnson

The Kansas City Chiefs experienced a greater loss this Sunday after revealing that two of their defensive starters suffered season-ending injuries.

Coach Andy Reid announced that linebacker Derrick Johnson and defensive end Mike DeVito have both ruptured their Achilles tendons during their 26-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Johnson went down untouched with an ankle injury in the game's first half. DeVito was carted off with a leg injury from virtually the same spot during the early minutes of the second half.

The Chiefs' linebacker has made four tackles in the game, giving him 985 for his professional career.

He is 15 tackles away from breaking Gary Spani's franchise record, though it is more likely that he will have to wait for the next season.

Johnson didn't appear to be in pain when he fell down during the game. However, he needed cart help in order to reach the locker room.

On the other hand, DeVito went down while chasing a tackle. He was obviously hurt when the medical staff checked him.

Both Johnson and DeVito left the stadium in crutches.

Reid claimed that both injured players will undergo evaluation but also admitted that they are more likely to rest this season off.

''We'll see what happens. I expect other players to step up and do the job." said Reid.

The injuries of Johnson and DeVito further strain the defense of the Chiefs. Another inside linebacker, Joe Mays suffered a wrist injury during the preseason and will take a few weeks to fully recover.

On the other hand, the Titans almost made it through the game unscathed. A left shoulder injury made linebacker Zach Brown leave the game early. According to Coach Ken Whisenhunt , he will undergo further examination on Monday.

The Chiefs is lined-up to face the infamous high-octane offense of Peyton Manning and Denver Broncos next week.
