The eighth-seeded Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong got the better of the tournament's seventh seed Malaysian tandem of Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh in two straight sets 21-15, 21-12 victory. The current world No.10 mixed doubles duo wrapped up the US$750,000 Sydney-based badminton championship semifinal match in just 41 minutes.

Meanwhile, Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen scored an upset victory against the sixth-seeded Indonesians Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanta. The Chinese badminton shuttlers lost the opening game but managed to win the next two sets to come away with a hard-fought come-from-behind 19-21, 21-11, 21-16 victory in 54 minutes.

In the women's doubles event, China's Bao Yixin and Chen Qingchen prevailed over the seventh-seeded Japanese pair of Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao to advance to the championship round of the prestigious badminton competition. The Japanese shuttlers won the first set but the Chinese pair bounced back and claimed the second game to force a decider.

In the third set of the match, Bao and Chen never looked back and moved along to win the match 15-21, 21-18, 21-16 in one hour and 24 minutes.  They will be facing the second-top seed Greysia Polii and Nitya Kris Maheswari of Indonesia, who eliminated the third-seeded Chinese pair of Yu Fang and Tang Yuanting 21-18, 21-17, in the final round on Sunday.

In the women' singles event, world No. 12 Sun Yu of China has booked a championship showdown against the current world No. 8 Saina Nehwal.
