Lomachenko knocked out the former champion in the last 2:02 minutes of the fifth round of their scheduled 12-round title fight. The 28-year-old southpaw landed a huge left uppercut on Martinez's chin and followed it with another strong right hook that sent Martinez lying flat on the canvas.

Martinez was unable to beat the count, forcing referee Danny Schiavone to wave off the fight. It was the 33-year-old's third professional defeat. The Puerto Rican has a record of 29 wins with 17 knockouts.

It was only Lomachenko's seventh professional boxing fight (6-1, 4 KOs), but the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi-native has managed to enter his name into the history books with the victory, becoming the fastest boxer to claim a world title in two different weight divisions.

The Ukranian national won his maiden world title by defeating American boxer Gary Russell Jr. by a majority decision victory that gave Lomachenko the vacant WBO featherweight title only with his third pro fight in two years ago. He broke the record set by Japan's Naoya Inoue, who registered eight fights to win titles in two divisions in 2014.

"I need more fights; it's not enough fights for me," Lomachenko said after his sensational debut at 130 pounds through a translator. "I need more fights to get better as a fighter."

Lomachenko's only loss was at the hands of Mexico's Orlando Salido. The Mexican boxer outpointed him in his second fight as a professional via a split decision in a featherweight title bout in March 2014.

"Hey Salido, I'm ready to fight you at any time," Lomachenko said. "Before the Vargas fight, I told him to win the fight but I never told him I wasn't going to fight him if he didn't, so let's do it."
