54 killed in Northeast China flood

By 10 a.m. on August 19th, at least 54 people died and 97 people were missing in Northeast China's Liaoning province. Based on the development of the heavy rains and severe floods in Liaoning province, Chinese National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs raised the emergency response level from IV to III.

So far, Jiang Li, who is the secretary-general of Chinese National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the vice minister of China's Ministry of Civil Affairs has been sent to the disaster-hit area to guide relief efforts with a work team.

According to latest reports from Liaoning Provincial Department of Civil Affairs, by 10 a.m. on August 19th, a total of 1.8 million people in 30 counties of Liaoning Province have been affected by floods, 54 people were killed and 97 people were still missing. Besides, more than 162,000 calamity-stricken people have been evacuated from flooded areas to safety places. More than 6,100 buildings have collapsed and the total direct economic loss is around 8.5 billion yuan($1.39 billion USD).

At present, Liaoning provincial government has allocated funds of 140 million yuan and sent 1000 tents, 16000 blankets and other disaster relief materials to disaster areas in order to help people endure the floods.

Liaoning Province is located in the southern part of Northeast China. It is often called "the Golden Triangle" because of its strategic geographical location, with the Yellow Sea in the south, North Korea's North Pyongan and Chagang provinces in the southeast, Jilin to the northeast, Hebei to the southwest, and Inner Mongolia to the northwest.
