Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott joined U.S. President Barack Obama’s growing coalition forces against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

The Australian military advisors along with strike aircraft could be deployed to “disrupt” and “degrade” the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’s (ISIS) inhumane actions, Abbott said in a statement.

Abbott outlined the discussion of military intervention in terms of domestic security and not simply being a matter of international politics.

There were at least 60 Australian citizens who are fighting with the militants in Middle East, Abbott said. The fundamental purpose of tackling the ISIS problem is to stop the Australian jihadists serving ISIS from returning home and posing a threat to the Australian community, he added.

Abbott also said that his government was working with its allies to see what they can “usefully contribute to operations,” whether they should help with some air capability or with some military advisers, protect the people, disrupt and, ultimately, degrade ISIS' capabilities.

However, the Prime Minister made it clear that the Australian government made no specific request or decision yet on their plans to fight ISIS.

“We’re obviously talking to our partners about what might be done, but I stress, no specific request has yet been made and no decision has as yet been made by the government,” PM Abbott added.

Abbot’s remarks came after President Obama prepared to outline the coalition forces’ strategy in the Middle East.

Australia together with other nations, that are part of a “core coalition”, are ready to offer military assistance to “ultimately destroy” ISIS troops who declared an Islamic caliphate in several regions across Iraq and Syria.
