Zhou Xingbai, a 29-year-old chronic gambler, has been identified as the main suspect behind a small explosion at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport that left four people injured.

A statement posted on a police microblog said that Zhou Xingbai lived in China's Jiangsu province and travelled all the way to Shanghai to carry out the explosion. Xingbai is said to have carried out the blast using fireworks stuffed inside empty beer bottles. The blast occurred at around 2:20 p.m. on Sunday. However, the blast was of a small magnitude and no flights were disrupted.

The four injured victims, including Xingbai, were immediately rushed to the hospital. According to reports, Zhou even attempted to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the neck using a knife after the blast.

According to a police statement, Zhou was originally from southern province of Guizhou and moved to Jiangsu after completing his graduation from high school in 2006. He had worked as an employee in several factories.

The statement issued by the police did not reveal when and how Xingbai got himself involved in gambling, but it is believed that grinding poverty may have pushed Zhou into the habit.

Xingbai reportedly lost all his wealth and savings in online gambling and was surviving on money borrowed from close friends.

In one of his posts, he had written that he would surely kill someone while carrying out the attack.
