Cincinnati Bengals Signs Ex-Defensive Tackle to Help Pay for Daughter's Cancer Treatment

The National Football League's (NFL) Cincinnati Bengals has signed former defensive tackle Devon Still in order to help him pay for his daughter's ongoing cancer treatment.

Last June, Still learned that his daughter, Leah, was diagnosed with stage-four pediatric cancer. The fourth stage means that the tumor has disseminated to distant lymph nodes, bone marrow, bone, liver, and possibly other organs.

Since then, Still was not able to contribute 100% to his team's preseason practice sessions. He missed most of the minicamp practices in order to take care of his daughter.

He was inevitable cut from the team, something that Still understood.

"I can't give football 100 percent right now. In the business aspect they want guys to solely focus on football, which is understandable," he said.

"We are here to win this city a Super Bowl and right now I am not in a position where I can give football 100 percent of everything I have."

The 25-year old former All-American was left without a job or medical insurance.

Then, the Bengals re-signed Still last Sunday to their practice squad.

Being relegated to the practice squad may have been sad news to most players, but it was a blessing for Still. He was given US $6,300 a week as salary, and would receive health insurance as well.

The position also means that he can stay and take care of his daughter more, as he does not need to travel around all that much.

Presently, Still revealed that he has shaved his head in solidarity with his daughter. She has begun her fourth round of chemotherapy.

It is Still's hope that the chemotherapy will shrink the tumor to the point where doctors can easily take it out.
