The Chinese women's national basketball squad got one step closer to securing a ticket to the upcoming Rio Olympics after demolishing Venezuela 77-59 in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in the City of Nantes in France on Monday.

Sun Mengxin scored a team-high 21 points coming off the bench while Shao Ting and Sun Mengran chipped in 14 and 11 points respectively. Eight Chinese players managed to also add their names to the scoring sheet.

On the other hand, Waleska Perez finished with a game-high 23 points for Venezuela.

In the early minutes of the match, the Chinese players seemed to be nervous in shooting, forcing coach Tom Maher to change some players. Sun Mengxin did not let the decorated Australian coach down as she hit form quickly after coming off the bench and dropped eight points in the first quarter. China closed the opening quarter with a 20-16 advantage.

The Chinese dominated both ends of the floor in the next two periods. Shao nailed 10 points early in the second half, before Sun Mengxin extended their lead to 29 points with a three-pointer to cap the third quarter 66-37 entering the final 12 minutes of the game.

With a comfortable large margin in hand, the Chinese national coach tried to experiment with different line-up combinations in the final period as they headed for a sure victory.

In April, the two squads played three friendly matches, with the Asian powerhouse winning all. China and Venezuela were drawn in Group D along with Spain.

China, which is currently ranked eighth in the FIBA world rankings, will be facing the world No. 3 Spain on Tuesday.
