Oculus has launched a new software jam for the Gear VR.

The price of the Samsung Gear VR, the company's virtual reality headset, will come to just US$199.

This price point is less expensive than some of the smartwatches in the market. But the catch is the Samsung Gear VR still needs to pair with an exclusive device to function.

Despite all its bells and whistles, the Samsung Gear VR is essentially a smartphone accessory exclusively made for the recently unveiled Galaxy Note 4 phablet. Though the Gear VR is equipped with motion sensors, buttons and touchpads, it won't be able to function without a smart device such as the Galaxy Note 4.

A smart device is necessary because its software, processing power and display are needfed to give the user an illusion of a digital 3D world.

Sounds will also come from the phablet and are best heard using either a Bluetooth headset or earphones.

As of the moment, the cost of the crucial piece to the whole 3D experience, the Note 4, has not been released but is rumored to be US$799 on its own, and $299 with a subscription to a mobile service provider, according to Slash Gear.

To be able to enjoy the virtual worlds created by the Gear VR and Note 4, the user has to dish out US$1,100 for both devices.

The possibility of having the pair be more accessible is possible since the launch dates and retailers for the virtual reality headset have not yet been disclosed.

The Samsung Gear VR is the result of the partnership between Samsung and Oculus VR, a fledgling company that launched a Kickstarter campaign to create a virtual reality headset.

The company was able to raise US$2.4 million while developing the Oculus Rift, Oculus' prototype VR headset. In March, Oculus VR was acquired by Facebook for US$2 billion in cash and Facebook stock.
