To identify their service, SheTaxis drivers wear hot pink pashmina scarves.
The new livery service will target women who "feel uncomfortable" with a male driver and prefer company of the same gender for their ride, Founder Stella Mateo told The New York Times.
The company aims to address the safety concerns of women. It also wants female drivers in the male dominated taxi industry.
Potential passengers will contact their ride through an app, available only to Apple users. But the company said the service will soon extend to Android devices.
The app will ask whether if there's a woman in the user's party. If not, it will recommend another taxi services to the requesting passenger.
SheTaxis will partner with other livery companies to provide competitive rates for their rides. The app will collect fares via credit or debit cards and then send the payments to the drivers.
Mateo said that SheTaxis already recruited 50 female drivers, ages 21 to 70. She also hopes to expand its service to Washington, Miami and Chicago in 2015.
Mateo's new car service will be subject to the same rules as yellow cabs, which are prohibited from refusing to serve a customer on the basis of gender, a Taxi & Limousine Commission official said.
