The 31-year-old American golf sensation turned professional in 2007 and has been winning big ever since. He made it to the top 5 in the PGA Championship in 2010, to top 2 in The Open Championship in 2011. He was among the Top 4 golfers in the 2016 Masters Tournament.
Although Johnson managed to win the championship, some have criticized the amateur behavior of the rules officials at the event. The controversy arose when Johnson was thought to have made a move warranting a penalty when the ball had moved without him touching it. A rules officer absolved him while another later approached him to inform him that he will be penalized.
The controversy has gathered much criticism from Rory Mcllroy and Jordan Spieth who have called the decision a joke revealing the amateur quality of the event organizers.
Johnson, however, has maintained that the confusion did not affect him significantly and that he tried to block the controversy and instead focus on his game. According to the BBC, he said "I thought I'd deal with it when I'm done. I tried to block it out and not let it bother me".
