A couple of months after Nong Youhui's birth, the boy's father were informed that something is unusual with his son's eyes. He got really concerned so he brought him to the hospital in Dahua, Southern China to have his son's eyes checked. He was then told that he would outgrow it and that his eyes would stop glowing in the dark and that his eyes would turn black like what most Chinese have. So his family started to care less and let him live like a normal person. He was even allowed to attend school, have friends and play like a normal kid would do.
The doctors, since then, have studied Nong Youhui's case and left the doctors astonished with his capability to make out things and read clearly in pitch black. His eyes that look like cat's eyes allowed him to read flawlessly without any aid of light and still have perfect vision during the day like many of us do.
One day, his teacher noticed something strange when he squinted in bright lights and whined about blurred eyesight. The teacher tried waving a flashlight at Nong Youhui's eyes and his eyes flashed back. He asked him if he can see through the dark and he said "Yes."
To prove this, Nong Youhui's friends invited him to catch crickets at night and he told them that he didn't need a flashlight to see do it and he was able to do it.
News about his unusual gift spread although out the city and many reporters looked for him and performed different experiments to see if the rumors were true. Expectedly, he passed all the tests and his repute to be a real-life mutant kept spreading.
According to the World Record Academy, Nong Youhui set the world record as the very first human who can see through the dark.
