Stephan Bonnar revealed the story behind his infamous UFC 153 drug-test fallout in a Monday interview with The MMA Hour.

The UFC Hall of Famer tested positive for Drostanolone after being finished in one round by former middleweight champion Anderson Silva in October 2012. As a result, he was suspended for one year from the UFC and eventually ended up retiring.

Bonnar said that using performance-enhancing drugs was one of the biggest mistakes in his life. According to The Ultimate Fighter finalist, he initially thought that there was no real harm in doing a steroid cycle since he felt like he was done with Mixed Martial Arts after being out of action for over a year.

"It completely blew up in my face," said Bonnar. "It was the worst thing that ever happened to me. It was the closest to offing myself I've ever been. It just sucked. So, anyway. That's why I'm so jaded now. That's the reason."

"I haven't been in the gym." added Bonnar, further explaining his use of steroids.  "I'm weak, I'm skinny, I got some stem cell procedures done on my knee, I took a lot of time off. I'm like, crap. I'm really injury-prone. So it was like, you know what, I have a month before I have to go train. So yeah, I'm not worried about getting tested any more. I'm going to do a cycle of steroids.

Bonnar claimed that his goal back then was to beef up his small physique. He stated that he felt like he never needed to fight again and that his cardio was the least of his worries.

However, the UFC suddenly offered Bonnar with a fight against Silva and The American Psycho thought that it was an opportunity he couldn't refuse.

"So it was like, oh man, now I have to work on my cardio, diet really good and be ready for this fight, hey if I beat Anderson Silva, the s--- is out of my system, I'm going to rule the world."

He lost the said bout to The Spider via technical knockout.

Bonnar said that his lopsided loss was a motivating factor for his comeback.

"That's a terrible way to go out," said Bonnar.

UFC 153 marked Bonnar's second failure in a postfight drug-test. He tested positive for Boldenone in 2006 after a unanimous-decision loss to Forest Griffin.

Bonnar made news last Friday with a bizarre fight announcement against Tito Ortiz. The American Psycho is lined up to face The Huntington Beach Bad Boy on Nov. 15 under Bellator.
