After a 20-point margin loss against Bosnia on Sunday, the world No. 18 South Koreans bounced back with a hard-fought 75-70 victory over the 19th ranked China to book a quarterfinal showdown with the tournament's three-time undefeated reigning champions, the USA.
The 6-foot-1 tall starting guard Lee Junghyun poured in 25 points while centers Shin Minsuk and Yang Jae Min contributed 18 points each to pace the Koreans, who defeated the Chinese in the last 2015 FIBA Asia U16 Championship in the semifinal round. The win marked South Korea's first appearance in the final eight of the prestigious sporting event.
Forward Rui Wang led China with team-high 16 points and eight rebounds while starting guard Yibo Wang added 13 points. China will face Argentina on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, world No. 11 Australia managed to contain Bosnia to seal a 75-72 victory. Dragan Elkaz paced the young Aussies with a team-high 25 points while grabbing eight rebounds and registering three assists to lead the national team in booking a quarterfinal clash against the host country Spain on Thursday.
The young Spaniards easily cruised to the final eight round of the tourney after they crushed the Chinese Taipei team with an imposing 112-60 even without the team's top gun Miguel Gonzales, who got injured.
Canada and Turkey also managed to enter the quarterfinal round after beating their respective opponents in the round of the 16.
