New planet forming in space, researchers find

HD 100546

A research from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory discovered a new planet forming around a star 335 light years from Earth.

Dr. John Carr, one of the researchers, said that as they study the protoplanetary disk in the star called HD 100546 they found a formation of planet that was orbiting the star.

According to researchers, protoplanetary disk, otherwise called as circumstellar disk, is a large disk of material that is orbiting a newly formed star that can create a planetary system.

They said that protoplanetary disks could not explain the extra source of gaseous emission of carbon monoxide molecules, but by tracking the velocity change they found out that it came from an orbit around a young star.

Researchers said that the distance from the star is somewhat larger than the distance of Saturn to the Sun.

Carr also noted that rather seeing the planet directly, they detected a gas that is swirling around the forming planet.

The results give a rare opportunity to study a planetary formation up close, he added.

He said that the circumplanetary disks have been theorized to surround giant planets at birth and controls the gas flow of the growing planet.

These findings are the first observational evidence of their existence, he added.

To date, the researchers are continuing to monitor the planet's motion and obtain additional data that can define the properties of the circumplanetary disk.

They theorize that the planet and its disk will disappear from view after two years as it becomes hidden by the inner edge of the circumstellar disk.

They calculated that it will take another 15 years until the planet comes to view again from Earth.
