PlayStation 4 (PS4) has sold one million units in the United Kingdom, Sony announced.

Sony PlayStation's UK managing director Fergal Gara revealed that PS4 achieved one million sales after 42 weeks of sales.

In the UK, PS4 ranks as the second fastest-selling home console of all time next to Nintendo's Wii, which reached one million sales in 38 weeks.

The PS4 sales surpassed PlayStation 3 by four weeks and the PlayStation 2 by eight weeks to the same milestone.

The Xbox 360 took 60 weeks before it reached one million sales.

PS4 was released last November 2013 and it already sold over 10 million units worldwide, reports said.

PS4 sales were "significantly" ahead of expectations even though there were supply issues in the first quarter of the year, Gara told Eurogamer. Sales figures were based on official Chart-Track data.

"Wii got there ever so slightly faster but it's the fastest versus any PlayStation or Xbox -- so any core gamer machine," Gara said.

After the launch of Destiny and since Christmas is fast approaching, Sony's console is showing no visible sign of a slowdown, Gara added.

According to Gara, Sony is thankful to all their retail partners.

"The work they have put in and the execution through the launch was exceptional, and without their support we would not got off the ground."

Gara also added they will continue to work very well together. Sony's plans for this Christmas are doing quite nicely and Sony doesn't anticipate any consumer problems.
