Microsoft is in serious discussions to acquire Mojang AB, the Swedish developer of the hit game, Minecraft, for more than US$2 billion.

Mojang could be Microsoft's first multibillion-dollar acquisition. The deal could be signed as early as this week, said news reports.

The deal came after Mojang founder Markus Persson reached out to Microsoft a few months ago to explore the possibility of a sale.

Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, believes Mojang could reinvigorate its Xbox business.

Minecraft could also help Microsoft appeal to the young generation, particularly smartphone gamers. Microsoft has struggled with its homegrown Windows Phone devices and against apps on rival phone systems.

In return, Microsoft can boost Minecraft's sales by expanding its user base through Microsoft's position in videogames and computers, and by developing more licensing agreements for toys and movies.

According to some sources, both companies quickly agreed on a framework. They're currently said to be working on the price and other details.

Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw and Mojang's CEO Carl Manneh declined to comment on the issue, however.

Minecraft, a Lego style open-world game, first released in 2009. Mojang has sold more than 50 million copies of Minecraft to date and earned over US$100 million in profits last year from the game and game merchandise.

Most of Minecraft's sales came from its console editions, surpassing Minecraft for PCs and Macs, reports said.

Minecraft has become a multi-platform global phenomenon. Its latest versions are made available on Sony's PlayStation, the Xbox, computers and mobile devices.

If an agreement is reached, Microsoft said it will keep the game available for rival products.
