Typhoon Nepartak News Update: 83 Dead, 19 Missing in Chinese Province Fujian

Typhoon Nepartak Hits China's Fujian Province

The bad weather in China continues.  Typhoon Nepartak reportedly affected Fujian province the worst, leaving 83 dead and 19 people missing.

According to Xinhua, the number of casualties was updated on Sunday. Fujian province's Minqing County is said to be the most affected. Out of the 83 deaths, 73 were recorded in the county, and out of the 19 people missing, 17 are from the county.

Typhoon Nepartak is the first official storm to hit China this year. It made a landfall in Fujian Province on July 9, and the heavy rains have continued.

The latest death toll in Fujian province raises the total number people dead since the typhoon struck to 309. The total number of missing people now stands at 112.

One of the most affected areas is China's Hubei Province. A dike in the area is said to have broken, causing more flooding in the area and trapping many residents.

Around 200 residents from two of the districts in Wuhan City were relocated prior to the broken dike.  Also, ore than 1,000 rescuers have been dispatched to the area. Around 70 people have been rescued from the flooding, but there are still people trapped, Outlook reported.

Power supply in the area has also been cut off. Natural gas supplies are being used. The broken dike is expected to be fixed soon. Around 10,000 houses have been destroyed since the typhoon made landfall.

Three officials have also been fired due to the number of people killed in the first typhoon in China.

Rain and flooding have been a problem in China since the start of June.
