According to Xinhua, the 22-year-old native of Shaanxi is looking to capture her maiden singles title of the tournament. She has already won three double's crowns under her belt, which includes the Stanford doubles title that she won last year along with fellow Chinese tennis player Xu Xifan.

Zheng and Xu will play in the doubles event at the 2016 Summer Olympic Gamest. The Chinese tennis pair will represent their country in the City of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil along with the PRC's elite tennis players Zhang Shuai, Peng Shuai and Wang Qiang. Zheng currently sits on the 19th spot in the latest WTA double's world ranking.

The Olympic-bound Zheng will be facing the tournament's seventh seed and current world No. 51 Alize Cornet, who got the better of the American Jennifer Brady 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in their first-round match.

According to The Strait Times, Zheng chalked up three aces and won 67 per cent of her first serve points on the hard courts of the Stanford University-homed tennis competition. On the other hand, the American youngster registered seven double faults and had troubles with her serve, winning just three points total on her second serve.

In the other first-round tennis matches, Xinyun Han of China failed to advance to the next stage of the tourney after losing to Japanese Misaki Doi 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. Meanwhile, Romanian Ana Bogdan and Nicole Gibbs of the United States both won their respective matches.
