August 22nd, a plastic greenhouse, which located in Dafeng City, Jiangsu Province, was damaged by unknown people. Unfortunately, the plastic greenhouse was the home for at least one million cockroaches. They were being bred here for use in traditional medicine. Therefore, the damage causes more than one million cockroaches to escape into neighboring places.

When our reporters rushed to the scene, the place was in a mess with steel pipes and bricks scattering around. Later, the local health department sent experts to search into the circumstances. They will formulate plans to kill those escaped cockroaches.
According to the farm owner Mr. Wang, the cockroach is considered to be a traditional Chinese medicine in China. Wang said the extracts from it could treat diseases including cancer, reduce inflammation and improve immunity. From last autumn, Wang has studied the investment project for more than half a year, and then he decided to invest in breeding American cockroaches. Later, Mr. Wang invested more than 100,000 yuan ($16,000) in 102 kilograms of American cockroach eggs.
In order to take care of these expensive creatures, Mr. Wang's mother also joined in for help. Mr. Wang recalled, at 6 p.m. on August 20th, when his mother planed to feed these creatures, she was shocked to find the greenhouse had been damaged and all the cockroaches had gone!
According to experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the odorous secretions produced by American cockroaches can alter the flavor of food. Also, if populations of cockroaches are high, there will be a strong concentration of this odorous secretion. Cockroaches can pick up disease-causing bacteria, such as Salmonella, on their legs and later deposit them on foods and cause food infections or poisoning. The local health department will make a kill plan for these pests.
