The Chinese government has issued a yellow alert, warning residents of gales and torrential rain especially in coastal areas, as typhoon Nida heads to the country.

According to the National Meteorological Center (NMC), typhoon Nida could hit south China's Guangdong Province Tuesday morning, becoming the fourth typhoon to hit the country this year.

The said typhoon was last seen 380 kilometers off the coast of Manila Sunday, packing maximum wind speed of 28 meters per second.

The typhoon's wind speed, however, is forecast to hit 38 to 45 meters per second when it makes landfall in China's Guangdong, the NMC said as it issued the yellow alert.

The alert is specifically raised in Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, and Guangxi. Residents in these were warned of gales and torrential rain.

Typhoon Nida was first spotted over the northwestern Pacific Ocean as tropical depression 6W Friday evening.

It reached typhoon strength on Saturday afternoon, unloading foot of rain in the Samar and Catanduanes islands of the Philippines.

According to an AccuWeather report, the storm is expected to pass by Luzon in the Philippines Monday and then head to China.

"Residents of China should prepare for impacts of the storm during the early and middle part of the week," the report said.

AccuWeater meteorologist Adam Douty said Southern Guangdong and much of Guangxi will have the highest impacts from the storm.

"Seas will build out ahead of the storm, creating hazards for shipping interests across the South China Sea. Swimmers should be aware of the threat for rough surf and increased rip currents along the southern coast beaches," Douty said.
