Roger Federer is already ranked no.2 in year-to-date rankings of the ATP Tour, surpassing main rival and 14-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal in the ladder.
Despite falling short in winning another major championship at the US Open championships, the 33-year old Federer still managed to gain grounds in the ATP World Tour battle as he accumulated 720 points to move past Nadal in the year-to-date rankings.

"Roger Federer has reached another semifinal at the US Open to be the new world no.2 in the Year to Date rankings. In fact, the actual YTD ranking see Djokovic as the no.1 ( 7,430pts), then Nadal (6,645 pts) and then Federer (6,160 pts)."
"Reaching the semifinal at the Flushing Meadows will give (at least) 720pts to the Swiss. This means that if Roger loses against Cilic he will have 6,880pts and he will overtake Rafa (6,645 pts) that wasn't fit to play in New York."
Federer had a solid US Open championships buildup after reaching the finals of the Rogers Cup (losing to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 7-6(7)) and winning the Cincinnati Masters (winning over David Ferrer 6-3,1-6,6-2) the next week.
At the US Open, the ageing but still extremely talented Swiss delivered a clinic in the early round before showing his fighting spirit, especially in the tough quarterfinal battle against Gabriel Monfils that saw him overcome a 0-2 set hole.
With another breakthrough performance in Flushing Meadows, Federer is optimistic he can still win another major title to add to his 17 Grand Slam haul and further solidify his status as the greatest tennis player of all-time.
"I'll give it a go again in Australia; I hope to be healthy there. I enjoy playing there. It's been one of my most consistent Slams. I hope to get another chance at it. I can't do more than try really hard, which I'm doing," Federer told the press following his first career loss to eventual champion Marin Cilic at the US Open semis.
