"It is good for the world to understand what is really happening in China," Kuhn, who also created, wrote and hosted the series, told Xinhua.

The series was jointly produced by American public broadcaster and TV program distributor The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and The Kuhn Foundation in cooperation with Shanghai Media Group.

"To our knowledge, 'China's Challenges' is the first international television production in association with a major China-based media organization that has won this prestigious award, re-affirming the special benefits of our unique US-China collaboration to tell the true story of China to the world," Kuhn said.

According to China Daily, China's Challenges has been aired on more than 200 PBS stations in the United States reaching 24 of the 25 top markets in the United States and more than 120 markets in total. In the US alone, there have been around 4,000 broadcasts of the series. Other countries airing the series are Australia, Canada, and Germany.

China's Challenges focuses on how China addresses sensitive issues including protection of the environment, distribution of wealth and education, social problems, prioritization, and the relationship between the traditional culture and the rampantly modernizing Chinese society.
