A Spanish study suggests handsome men or men with more masculine faces have lower sperm quality.

Men with more masculine faces have always been thought to be more attractive to women and to have better semen quality.

But masculine looking men face a surprising disadvantage of lower sperm quality, said a study by the University of Valencia in Spain. The findings were published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology.

According to researchers, higher levels of testosterone have been observed to impair sperm production. This finding may signify a trade-off between investments in secondary sexual signaling that manifests in facial masculinity and fertility.

Using a special technique called Phenotype Linked Fertility Hypothesis (PLFH), researchers discovered the ability to choose fertile partners mattered when it came to factors such as cultural background and sex.

As part of the study, researchers used 50 profile color photographs of the front and right-side of men's faces. The pictures were then scanned and an oval mask placed over the image to minimize the visual effect of hairstyle

This was done to ensure the 62 Caucasian male students asked to assess the photos wouldn't be biased by the hairstyles.

The 50 males in the photos were asked to refrain from sexual intercourse and masturbation for about three to five days. Their semen was immediately analyzed afterwards.

The findings revealed that men tend to overestimate the physical appearance of other men as opposed to women.

According to Professor Gab Kovacs, international medical director of the Monash IVF, attractiveness is a very relative thing since each person has different tastes.

Regarding semen fertility, Kovacs said most semen is fertile so it makes little difference whether it's just more or less fertile in a small degree.

Kovacs suggests it's useless worrying about not having good looks but instead, the focus should be living a healthy lifestyle to increase sperm quality and sperm count.

Anyone can enhance their semen quality by eating lots of fruits and vegetables, refraining from sports such as cycling, avoiding stress, taking cold water baths and drinking coffee in moderation.
