The American branch of the humanitarian organization Red Cross Tuesday launched the Blood Donor App, a program that allows its users to set blood donation schedules, record the total amount of donations they've made, earn rewards and invite others to join in the crusade.

"The Red Cross Blood Donor App is a new way to help meet the constant need for blood," said Scott Caswell, CEO for the Red Cross Greater Ozarks-Arkansas Blood Services Region. "The app makes it easier, faster and more convenient for users to schedule and manage their donation appointments, track the lifetime impact of their donations, and recruit friends and family to roll up a sleeve with them."

The Red Cross, which is the United States' biggest provider of blood and blood-related products, is uniquely positioned to introduce the cutting edge and convenient technology to existing and potential platelet and blood donors.

Aside from managing and scheduling blood donation appointments, the app also offers a blood drive or donation locator, the ability to synchronize appointments with the device's calendar and personalized selfies the donors could use on social media sites to share the experience of donating blood.

The app also rewards the donor by giving badges which are earned through donations, interactions with the app and notifying others of blood donating events. The donors would also be offered discounts on select American brands, such as ProFlowers, A1 Auto and Shari's Berries.

Stories of blood recipients and other donors would also be featured in the app.

The Red Cross has become the leading contributor in providing people crucial information during times of need. It already has preparedness and disaster apps, which have accumulated over 5 million downloads in the past two years, out in app stores, and with the Blood Donor App, it takes things to a whole new level by providing more blood to those who need it most.

The Blood Donor App is available for free in app stores.
