Qualcomm Signs new Patent License Agreement With Oppo

Qualcomm and China's Oppo have signed a new 3G and 4G patent license agreement.
The patent deal between both companies the states that Oppo will pay royalty to Qualcomm to use its 3G WCDMA and CDMA2000 and 4G—including three-mode (LTE-TDD, TD-SCDMA, and GSM)—technologies on its products, which also include Blu-ray players sold in the United States and Europe. In addition, Qualcomm has agreed to pay a $975 million fine and to parameters for patent licensing deals with Chinese device makers that include Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, and Xiaomi.

Before this deal with Qualcomm, Oppo was the largest unlicensed phone maker, according to San Diego Union Tribune. The royalties are in line with the reorganization plan submitted by Qualcomm to China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).
"This license agreement will allow us to have access to the most advanced technologies in the mobile industry and enable us to craft elegant devices with extraordinary experience for the consumers," said Adler Feng, director of IP for Oppo.
According to Strategy Analytics figures, in the second quarter 2016, Oppo grew by 137 percent year-over-year to become the fourth largest global smartphone vendor, with 18 million shipments and 5.3 percent of the market share.
Qualcomm and other U.S.-based tech vendors, such as Intel and IBM, are making strong moves into the lucrative Chinese market. Alex Rogers, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing, said the company is happy with the agreement made with Oppo.
While announcing the company's second-quarter earnings, Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf said more than 100 smartphone makers in China have signed patent licensing deals with the tech giant, eWeek reported.
