China's table tennis team began their 2016 Summer Olympic Games campaign in style on Sunday with top players Ding Ning and Ma Long being victorious in straight sets during their matches in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Current world No 2 women's singles player Ding fought back from trailing 6-0 in the second set to overcome the mid-way thriller, before wrapping up an 11-5, 11-8, 11-5, 11-2 come from behind victory over Elizabeth Samara of Romania in just 11 minutes. "I'm a little bit nervous since it's my opening game," said Ding."But I'm quite satisfied with my following performance especially that I kept calm when my opponent caught a double of edge balls to improve from 4-0 to 6-0. Ding continued.
"I've prepared to face any unexpected situations since anything is possible on the court," she added.
The left-handed native of Daqing, Heilongjiang is a two-time singles world champion winner. Ding won her first World Table Tennis Championship in Rotterdam, Netherlands in May 2011. She was able to recapture the title once again in the last year's edition of the prestigious tournament in Suzhou, China.
Ding is on her second Olympic trip and will be gunning for the gold after bowing to fellow Chinese Li Xiaoxia in the women's singles final in the previous quadrennial sporting event.
Meanwhile, reigning men's singles world No. 1 Ma Long breezed past Jonathan Groth of Denmark in four games that only lasted for 19 minutes. The 2015 world champion is aiming for his first Olympic individual gold medal finish in Rio, according to NBC.
Ding will next play 19-year-old Doo Hoi Kem of Hong Kong, China, while Ma will face Jung Young-sik of South Korea in the fourth round.
