FIBA World Cup: France Upsets Hosts Spain to Knock Them Out of Tournament

The most-likely prediction of a Spain-USA gold-medal showdown in the FIBA World Cup will no longer be happening, as France pulled a major upset over the hosts with a 65-52 victory in Madrid on Wednesday.
San Antonio Spurs' forward Boris Diaw and Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert led the French in the upset.

Diaw was playing with tremendous hustle finishing the game with 15 points shooting 50 percent from the field and adding three assists and 5 boards.
Despite Gobert only scoring five points, he was a tenacious rebounder putting up 13 boards, and most importantly, played excellent interior defense, which played a huge part in limiting Spain's big men Marc Gasol, Pau Gasol and Serge Ibaka.
The only player that seemed to show up for Spain was Pau Gasol. He began to find his stride late in the game, but was unable to receive any other support. French players Batum and Heurtel then started hitting big shots to seal the win for France.
Pau finished the game with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. The only other player to score in double-figures for Spain was Navarro with 10. Marc and Ibaka combined for a total five points shooting a disappointing 2-of-14 from the field.
As a whole, Spain shot just 32 percent during the whole game, and a mere 9 percent from 3-point range.
France will be moving on to the semi-finals against Serbia Friday, Sep. 12. Ironically, Serbia also pulled a major upset over Brazil defeating them by a dominating 28 points.
Team USA will be facing Lithuania in the semi-Finals on Thursday, Sep. 11. The winner of both semi-finals games will be facing each other in the gold-medal FIBA World Cup game.
Spain was considered a lock to be in the Finals. Some even felt they would be the favorites over USA considering their much more experienced frontcourt. France's upset makes the tournament a little more intriguing, as Team USA will have to step it up to ensure the same outcome doesn't happen to them.
