It was not the first time that Li and Govortsva met in court. In fact, Li said she had played against Govortsova for three times before Monday's match in New York.

Govorstova, who turned professional in 2002 and achieved her highest WTA singles ranking of world number 35 at age 23, has never won a match against Li.

Li said she played without complacency during Monday's match even if she already knew how to play and win against Govorstova. She said no one really knows what happen on the court.

6-2, 6-2 Victory

The Chinese tennis superstar made a 4-0 lead in the opening set by powering her forehand and backhand stroked with precision to end the first set with 6-2.

The second set started with Li leading 3-1. The Belorussian tennis professional struggled to hold her serving games but the Chinese player wrap up the victory with another 6-2

The Chinese tennis superstar, who rose to prominence after winning the 2011 French Open singles title, said she was confident of her play style even if she was kept out of the finals gate both in Cincinnati and Toronto.

Breezing Into the Second Round

Li, who has won a total of 7 WTA and 19 ITF singles titles, will face Sofia Arvidsson in the second round.

Because of her impact in China, Li appeared as one of the Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World this year. She has also become one of the world's most well-known and marketable athletes.

Those who followed the career of Li said she first loved playing badminton at the age of six, following the footsteps of her father who was a professional badminton player.

A tennis coach, however, convinced her to shift to tennis after seeing her potential in the sport. In 1997, Li joined China's National Tennis Team and turned professional at age 16.
